President Kiir holds a meeting with Dr. Lam Akol.

On August 9, 2023, in Juba, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, the leader of the National Democratic Movement, emphasized the need for timely elections as outlined in the peace roadmap. Following a meeting with President Kiir on Wednesday, Dr. Lam Akol spoke to journalists, expressing gratitude for the reception and hospitality in Juba. He discussed the upcoming preparations for the general elections, underscoring the importance of adhering to the peace agreement’s stipulations.

“We appreciate the President’s reception and hospitality since my arrival in Juba. Our discussions focused on the next stage, which involves preparing for the general elections, because we understand that the peace agreement concludes with the electoral process,” stated Dr. Lam. The veteran politician conveyed the belief that expediting the implementation of necessary requirements would facilitate the timely conduct of elections, emphasizing the people’s eagerness for elections rather than extensions.

Lam asserted, “What needs to be done now is to create a conducive atmosphere where all political parties can freely present their programs by engaging with the people.” However, the government countered, stating that ongoing tasks such as unifying and redeploying the army, establishing the National Elections Commission, forming the Political Parties Council, and enacting a permanent constitution are currently in progress.
